Managing Sleep Issues in Alzheimer’s Disease

Many people with Alzheimer’s experience changes in their sleep patterns. People with Alzheimer’s often have problems with sleeping or may experience changes in their sleep schedule. As with changes in memory and behavior, sleep changes somehow result from the impact of Alzheimer’s on the brain. Many older adults with dementia also notice changes in their sleep, but these disturbances occur more frequently and tend to be more severe in Alzheimer’s.

Drug-Less Strategies

Prioritizing non-drug strategies is crucial due to the potential adverse effects associated with sleep medications, particularly in older adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s. These strategies work by optimizing a comfortable sleep environment, establishing healthy sleep routines, and mitigating factors contributing to sleep disruptions, such as excessive daytime napping.

Other methods of curbing Alzheimer’s impact on sleep include maintaining consistent meal and bedtime schedules, maximizing exposure to natural sunlight in the morning, incorporating regular physical activity earlier in the day, and minimizing stimulants like alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. Additionally, addressing underlying pain, avoiding certain medications close to bedtime, and ensuring a comfortable bedroom temperature can enhance sleep quality.

Daytime measures such as providing comforting objects and discouraging prolonged wakefulness in bed can further facilitate restorative sleep. Discouraging activities like watching television while awake help reinforce the association between the bed and sleep.

Other Sleep Management Techniques

Despite the priority of non-pharmaceutical treatment methods, there are times when these approaches can be ineffective or when sleep disturbances are accompanied by disruptive behaviors. In such cases, the need for sleep-inducing medications may be considered, although the associated risks, including an increased susceptibility to falls, fractures, and cognitive decline, warrant caution.
