Summer is here and it’s time for sun, fun, and relaxation! While summer is a great time for outdoor activities, seniors should be mindful of the extra precautions they need to take to stay healthy and safe.
As we age, our bodies have a harder time adjusting to sudden temperature changes, making it all the more important to be proactive about our health and wellbeing during the hot summer months. Here are 10 tips to help seniors stay healthy and safe this summer.
Tip #1: Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential during the hot months, even if you’re not thirsty. Dehydration is a common problem among seniors, causing headaches, discomfort and can even lead to serious health issues. Both alcohol and caffeinated drinks like soda, coffee and energy drinks quickly dehydrate your body, increasing your risk for adverse health effects.
That’s why we recommend minimizing your intake of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks keeps you from becoming dehydrated. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also recommended to help keep you hydrated, so pick what works best for you and your loved ones.
Tip #2: Reduce Strenuous Activities
The high temperatures can make it harder for seniors to tolerate physical activities. Therefore, it’s important to reduce any strenuous or physical activities when the weather is hot. Staying in air-conditioned or cool places and out of the sun is also highly recommended.
Tip #3: Protect Yourself in the Sun
Protecting yourself from the sun is essential during the summer months. Make sure to use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, even on cloudy or overcast days. Be sure the sunscreen also blocks both UVA and UVB rays, these are harmful rays linked to cancer. Hats are also a great idea for protecting against the sun, and when possible, stay in shaded areas like covered patios or shady trees.
Tip #4: Wear Light Clothing
It’s also important to dress for the weather during the summer months. Light-colored and loose-fitting clothes are a must to keep cool and comfortable. Natural fabrics such as cotton also help to keep cool compared to synthetic fibers but choose what works for you.
Tip #5: Be an Early Bird or Night Owl
If you must be outside during a summer heat wave, limit your outdoor activities to the morning and evenings since the sun is the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. It’s also important to use the time you have wisely while avoiding the hottest hours of the day, so get as much done as early as possible.
Tip #6: Watch for Heat Stroke
During the summer, everyone is at increased risk for heat stroke, especially seniors. It’s important to be mindful of the signs of heatstroke that include confusion, disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, lethargy, nausea, and rapid pulse. Make sure to seek medical attention immediately if you or your loved one's experience any of these symptoms.
Tip #7: Review Your Medications
Many seniors take medication on a regular basis, and some of these medications are known to cause side effects such as increased sensitivity to ultraviolet rays. Always review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist to determine if there’s any potential risk of sun exposure.
Tip #8: Protect Your Eyes
The eyes are a sensitive part of the body, and too much exposure to the sun can cause irritation and damage. When outside, wear sunglasses that protect from UV rays to help protect your eyes from harmful rays.
Tip #9: Use Bug Spray
The summer is prime time for insects, and seniors need to protect themselves from bug bites. Seniors may want to consider taking preventative measures such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants and using bug spray when outdoors. Bug bites are annoying but are typically harmless, however some can become infected so be mindful and use medicated ointments.
Tip #10: Schedule a Check-up
No matter the season, it’s essential to maintain regular check-ups with a primary care provider to monitor your health, prevent illness, and manage chronic health issues. It’s a good idea to schedule your check-up during the summer months as your doctor can provide additional advice on how to stay healthy during the warmer weather months.
